Reddit is the most-cited source in AI answers. Here's what that means for your product

Semrush's Jan 2026 data puts reddit.com at #1 among domains cited by LLMs. If ChatGPT and Google's AI answers lean on Reddit threads, the threads are the marketing.

When someone asks an AI assistant “what's the best budgeting app for freelancers”, the answer has to come from somewhere. Semrush measured where: across the answers LLMs give, reddit.com is the single most-cited domain.

That number is the whole thesis of this site in one line. The channel that became one of Google's most visible domains is now also the source that AI answers lean on hardest. A good Reddit thread doesn't just rank — it gets read out loud by the assistant.

Why Reddit, specifically

  • The content is shaped like an answer. “I've used A, B and C for two years; here's what broke” is exactly what a model reaches for when asked to compare A, B and C.
  • It's first-person and specific. Marketing pages say what a product does. Reddit says what it did for someone with your problem.
  • It's fresh. Threads get new comments for years. Retrieval systems favour recency; Reddit supplies it for free.
  • It's in the pipes. Reddit has data-licensing deals with major AI companies and is heavily indexed by Google, so it's present at training time and at retrieval time.

What it means if you sell something

Your homepage is not what the model quotes. A thread in r/freelance where three people describe how they handle irregular income — and one of them mentions your app — is. That thread is discoverable in three places at once: on Reddit, in Google, and inside AI answers. No ad buys all three.

A realistic GEO playbook for a small team

  • Pick the three questions you want to be the answer to. Phrase them the way a person would ask an assistant. Search Reddit for those exact phrasings and note which subreddits the top threads live in.
  • Find the people already answering there. Long-standing accounts, sometimes moderators, who post honest comparisons. On BidPanda you can filter creators by community and karma and verify the account on Reddit before you talk to them.
  • Brief for honesty, not hype. An answer-shaped post — what it does, what it doesn't, who it's for — is what gets cited. A pitch is what gets removed.
  • Stay in the thread. The follow-up comments are where the specificity lives, and specificity is what models quote.
  • Measure in months, not days. Reddit threads compound. Check branded search and assistant answers a quarter later, not the next morning.

Where BidPanda fits

We don't write posts or run campaigns. We list verified Reddit creators — real accounts, self-reported stats you check on Reddit yourself, the communities they're actually in, and their rates — and a jobs board where you describe what you need and eligible creators come to you. The deal is direct and we take 0%. What it costs is up to each creator.

Questions people ask

Why do LLMs cite Reddit so much?
Reddit threads are long, specific, first-person and constantly updated — the exact shape of content that answers 'which X should I use for Y' questions. Reddit also licenses data to AI companies and is heavily indexed by Google, so it's both in training data and in retrieval.
Can I get my product mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
Not directly. But AI answers cite what people say on Reddit, so honest, detailed threads that mention your product in the right community are the most durable lever available.
Is this only relevant for ChatGPT?
No — Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and others draw on the same corpus. Reddit's Google visibility is separately documented on our comparison page.
